METAvivor appreciates your donation and honors your generosity by ensuring that 100% of your donation goes toward supporting grants for metastatic breast cancer research.
Since 2008, Washington Grove Elementary School has had at least 6 staff members diagnosed with breast cancer.
In September of 2015, we lost two dear staff members, Betty and Jan, within weeks of each other and we will never be the same. And we have another staff member, Darby, continuing to work as she lives with Stage IV Breast Cancer.
In April of 2016, we became proactive in raising money for organizations that would spend 100% on breast cancer research. We want more than an awareness of the disease, we want to support finding a cure for metastatic breast cancer now!
We held our first Washington Grove Elementary School Breast Cancer Research Walk “Raising Hope For A Cure” last year. Our efforts raised $8,418 for METAvivor, which used 100% of this money for breast cancer research.
We are holding our second annual walk on April 29, 2017 and are asking that you please consider donating to METAvivor. We hope that if we all work together, we can see an end to breast cancer.
My fight with Stage IV metastatic cancer continues. I am starting to understand my new reality. Life continues just as before my diagnosis, but now every moment is framed between doctor appointments and scans. Each blood draw and scan creates days of holding my breath waiting to see if the cancer is active again. Every day decisions seem more important and difficult to make. Life is never stress free. This is the life of metastatic cancer patient.
Thankfully, at this time my cancer is sleeping. My current treatment is working to control, but not cure, this disease. I am lucky for the moment. This treatment is relatively new. It only came out around three years ago. It is another weapon in my oncologist’s arsenal and it is a result of research. Unfortunately, it is not enough. It will only work for a limited time and then I will be on to the next one. That is why more research needs to be done regarding metastatic cancer, not only to find the next treatment to extend life but research to find a cure.
As I travel through this life with cancer, I continue to be thankful for the support I have been given by my friends, family and coworkers. I am thankful that I can still work and have occasional moments when I forget about my disease. I am thankful for the unconditional love and support I get each day from my loving husband, my parents, and our families.
The family of Betty Williams has asked that any donations made in her memory be sent to METAvivor. We were all shocked and deeply saddened by her unexpected death in September of 2015 from metastasized breast cancer previously thought to be cured. We hope you will join us at the event to think of Betty and donate to METAvivor to try to find a cure to prevent more families from losing loved ones too early.
Please join us for our Breast Cancer Research Walk on Saturday April 29th at 10 AM at Washington Grove Elementary School, 8712 Oakmont St., Gaithersburg MD 20877
