METAvivor has joined forces with Moore Fight Moore Strong (MFMS) to produce #LightUpMBC this year. MFMS has been lighting up monuments around the world to honor the memory of metastatic breast cancer patient and best friend, Jessica Moore, who passed away at the age of 36. #LightUpMBC raises awareness for Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) and the critical need for funding research for life extending treatments for the already metastasized patient. Last year, MFMS worked to unite over 80 locations across the globe to illuminate major landmarks in teal, green and pink to raise awareness for MBC on and around National MBC Awareness Day which is October 13th. Teal represents healing and spirituality, green represents the cycle of life over death and the pink overlay signifies that the cancer originated in the breast. In 2020, our goal is to have a landmark light in every state.
Following are some important facts to highlight. Each year, over 42,000 people die from metastatic breast cancer. That equates to 115 women and men per day. MBC occurs when the cancer has left the breast and traveled to other parts of the body. 30% of early stage breast cancer patients have a recurrence as Stage IV MBC, yet less than 5% of breast cancer research is allocated to MBC. There is currently no cure for MBC. Research is the only thing that can extend lives.
"METAvivor has worked very hard to increase research funding specifically for Stage IV MBC and was able to fund over $5 million in research grants in 2019. This will be much more challenging for 2020. The pandemic may cause research funding to move backward instead of forward as many organizations have discontinued their research cycle this year." said METAvivor Executive Director Sonya Negley. "METAvivor is continuing our scientific, peer-reviewed research cycle. We simply must keep focused on our funding target and work together to continue MBC research"
100% of all donations to METAvivor fund MBC research and are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.
