Renee Gorevin is one of the first 25 Charter Members of South Tahoe CrossFit! She had worked out at South Tahoe CrossFit for the 5 and 1/2 years before things began hurting – not sure why, she thought that maybe she was “just getting old.” According to Renee, the pain changed all the time; it got better and then it got worse. She continued her athletic lifestyle and even hiked 100 miles on the John Muir Trail for two weeks last summer. Then, in the beginning of September 2015, the pain increased and would not go away. Renee went to the doctor and on September 2015, had a bone scan. By October 2015, test results from a bone biopsy confirmed that her primary breast cancer had spread to her bones and liver.
In December of 1994, at 37 years old, Renee was diagnosed with breast cancer, “garden variety,” according to her doctor at the time, and fifteen lymph nodes were removed, none of which had cancer cells present. She went through chemotherapy and surgery. After 21 years of thinking she was cancer free, it returned as Metastatic Breast Cancer, or cancer that has traveled from the initial cancer site in the breast and spread to other parts of the body. There is NO cure for Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC)--113 women and/or men die from MBC EVERYDAY in the US. It is the only type of breast cancer people die from.
Renee is back at South Tahoe CrossFit after finishing 6 months of aggressive chemotherapy and building back her stamina. She has had 2 clear PET/CT scans (April and July), which means there is no detectable cancer present. She will continue to have PET/CT scans for the rest of her life as well as receiving targeted chemotherapy (nontoxic) every three weeks which so far is keeping the cancer at bay.
We wholeheartedly support increased funding and research for Metastatic Breast Cancer. The fact that a person like Renee can be so healthy and athletic and can still have this happen after 21 years speaks to the urgency of the need for more focus and research on Metastatic Breast Cancer. We are holding out for a cure – for Renee and all the other men and women affected by this disease. Please help us raise funds for METAvivor.org! 100% of your dollars will be used for research to find a cure for Metastatic Breast Cancer. Thank you.
